The most important part of tag placement on a DoD shipment is that the tag be placed on a vertical side of the shipping container and not the top or bottom. The DoD makes the following suggestions for label placement whenever possible:
Guidelines
  • Place the RFID label on the same side as your address label. (The MSL or Unit Pack label may cover the RFID label because RFID labels do not require a line of sight.)
  • Labels should be placed right of center at least 5cm from all edges if possible.
  • Do not place labels directly over seams or metal fixtures.
  • Do not overlap other RFID labels. RFID labels should be separated by at least 10cm.
  • Palletized unit loads should have RFID labels placed on a shrink-wrapped area using the same guidelines as case tagging. Do not place a pallet RFID label directly on a case that will be removed from the pallet.
