FAQ > DoD > What is a CLIN? What is an NSN?

Search the FAQ for entries containing:

Contract Line Item Number - A single line on a purchase order. This almost always represents a single NSN (National Stock Number / SKU (Stock Keeping Unit)) -- also known as 'what am I buying and how many of them?'

A CLIN may represent services (installation, consulting) -- whereas an NSN is listed in a CLIN and almost always represents a standardized part number / tangible goods.

We have seen contracts that have several parts/NSN's listed in a CLIN. This happens. You can usually get the contracting officer to change this readily and easily so your RFID tags will match the contents of the boxes they are attached to. Usually they create sub-clins (0001 becomes 0001AA, 0001AB, ...).
