Indoors GPS with RFID: Is it possible?
Monday, April 5, 2010 at 4:36PM In a recent article published on RFID Switchboard by our very own Carl Brown, he takes a look at the future of tracking anything anywhere with RFID. At this time, RFID can't actually track you anywhere at any time. Instead, it requires an interaction between tags and readers designed to find and monitor those tags. At this point in RFID history, readers and tags still have plenty of limitations. Readers are limited by their read range and tags are limited based on the materials they're attached to or the way they're attached.
In other words, even if someone wanted to track something (or someone) as they travel across the globe, it's very unfeasible. That being said, it's also clear that the ability to track items as they move from room to room, building to building, city to city and beyond could completely change asset tracking and management as we know it. This system, perhaps accurately called a global positioning system, would require a large, concerted effort by a lot of different players in order to make it happen. Read the article to learn about how RFID could impact that effort!
