Emergency! Where's that file?
Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at 4:36AM It seems the killer application for RFiD is anything that has lots-and-lots of moving parts. Odd as it may seem, printed documents are still everywhere by the 10's of thousands. And, we still lose them. At SimplyRFiD, we store 100% of our business information* in NetSuite and our original documents in GoogleDocs. But, many businesses still run on paper.
Last week, we wrote an article in Global Identification on tracking documents with RFID. How do you keep tracking of 20,000 court cases per year? We tell you how the State of Florida did it.
* I tried to think about 'where do we still use paper'. We actually do keep a paper trail of every order/shipment we produce. We run a checklist of what we are fulfilling and we checkoff every step of the process. Our shipment/fulfillment checklist is four pages to ensure we get every order correct. We could store all of this in NetSuite but we'd need a handheld terminal so each checkmark could be entered as performed and these take place at different locations. On average, we lookup one shipment that had an error to see how we can improve the fulfillment process and we refer back to our handwritten paperwork. In nearly 100% of our mishaps, we discover it's because we skipped a step in our shipping process. The cost of a handheld would be higher than the potential automation savings.
